Matching Window Manufacturers Specifications for Acoustic and Thermal performance

  • Products: Used TP652

A couple in Cheshire carrying out an exacting refurbishment project on an old property, located close to a busy road, have called on the assistance of illbruck to help ensure that the finished installation of their high quality timber windows matched the manufacturer’s specifications for both acoustic and thermal performance.

The refurbishment, including the installation of 17 Mumford & Wood casement windows, has been carried out by the locally based firm of Access Builders. The firm received on site training from tremco illbruck in the correct use of the manufacturer’s trio system; launched to help address the highest requirements on airtightness.

Mark Ridley comments: “This is a complicated building, dating back some 200 years, that has been altered several times in its history. The oldest part was a single skin Cheshire brick building which has had an inner leaf added, and now the whole structure, including the latest additions, have been finished with K-Rend.

“We have gone quite high spec on the windows, choosing Mumford & Wood with the double glazing units featuring St Gobain ‘Silence’ laminated glass for the roadside elevation. The manufacturer recommended that we use a system like the one from tremco illbruck to ensure the installation matched the performance of the windows themselves, because any gap could defeat the object of specifying high acoustic performance.

“illbruck not only gave us a lot of design support over the phone and on-line but also sent a technician to give our builders a comprehensive ‘toolbox talk’ on the correct use of the Compriband and foam sealant. Now that all the windows are in, the level of sound reduction is very noticeable.”

TP652 Compriband Trio Plus is an impregnated, pre-compressed multi-functional sealing tape which has been developed to meet the increased demands of PassivHaus and the top levels of the Code for Sustainable Homes, and is intended for refurbishment as well as new-build projects.

It can be used to seal window and door connecting joints against wind and driving rain while providing thermal insulation for the entire installation depth, and an airtight internal barrier. The product can also be used for sealing panel joints in prefabricated systems or off-site construction. TP652 Trio Plus ensures breathable sealing in accordance with the “inside tighter than outside” principle.
