Why incorrect fitting of a vapour control layer is such a problem

The breathable membranes that illbruck supply are designed specifically for the process of allowing vapour to pass through into a ventilated cavity which can then dissipate to the external environment, preventing this flow of moisture can lead to negative consequences in a project build.

When it comes to the sealing of a building envelope, illbruck believes in the concept of ‘Inside tight than out’. It is factor of critical importance when relating to the moisture and passage of vapour through the external walls and joints in any construction project. This factor is particularly important in the temperate, moist climate found in the UK. In the UK the transmission of warm to cool air would be from the internal environment of a building to the cooler air outside. This passage should be allowed to escape in order not to trap unwanted moisture or condensation.

Membranes which are tasked with the job of protecting and sealing buildings can damage them if this process is hindered. For example, a vapour control layer, effectively blocks the passage of air from inside to out, effectively trapping the damp, moist air inside a building. Added to which any damage, penetrations or perforations in the sealing membrane can still allow vapour/moisture into cavity areas.

The breathable membranes that illbruck supply are designed specifically for the process of allowing vapour to pass through into a ventilated cavity which can then dissipate to the external environment, whilst at the same time protect the interior of the building from outside water.

Illbruck breathable membrane technology provides the following benefits:

Block/Allow – The passage of vapour and moisture is allowed, whilst outside water is deflected from entering the interior of the building.

Weathertightness – illbruck membranes such as ME007 FR Window & Door Sealing Membrane + are designed to be tough and robust, resisting weather conditions.

Water resistance – Whilst vapour and moisture are allowed to escape, the properties of the ME007+ for example act as a barrier to water ingress, further protecting the building. This membrane achieves water resistance to EN 1928 at a 2 kPa head of water for 24 hours.

Air tightness – Membranes need to yes, allow moisture and vapour to pass through, however wind resistance is vital to mitigate energy/heat loss within the building. ME007+ is airtight and can achieve Passivhaus standards.

Wind resistance – In order to product buildings from the eternal environmental element, membranes must be adequately wind resistant.

ME007 FR Window & Door Sealing Membrane + is available now

ME007 + is available in 50m rolls, with pre-cut widths from 60mm to 400mm. When used with illbruck FR Membrane Adhesive (SP025), it creates a seamless, airtight, and watertight barrier that enhances the longevity and performance of your building envelope.
